Food Security and Nutrition
Strengthening Household Food Production
In Rusinga Island, food insecurity remains a major challenge, with about 38% of households struggling to access sufficient and nutritious food. As a semi-arid area, the community faces frequent drought, changing weather patterns, limited water resources, and declining productivity from traditional subsistence farming.
As a result, many households survive on an average of about 1.5 meals per day, affecting the health and wellbeing of families and increasing the risk of malnutrition among children. In response, Victoria Friendly Montessori - VFM Kenya works with communities to strengthen household food production and improve nutrition through sustainable agricultural initiatives.
Our Goal
Our Agriculture Project aims to ensure that every family in Rusinga has access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and supports an active and healthy life.
Our Vision
We envision a community free from hunger and malnutrition, where food production contributes to improved livelihoods in ways that are economically viable, socially inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.
What We Do
To address food insecurity, VFM engages communities in sustainable food production initiatives through training, access to agricultural inputs, and the adoption of climate-smart farming practices. Through these activities, we strengthen food, nutrition, and livelihood security at the household level, helping families become more resilient to future challenges such as drought, hunger, and disease.
We train households on climate-smart agriculture and kitchen gardening, and we work in partnership with Development in Gardening (DIG) to strengthen community gardening initiatives. Through this collaboration, households receive practical training and technical support to establish and manage productive home gardens.
Access to water is also supported through community water initiatives that enable households to maintain kitchen gardens and small-scale farming activities throughout the year.
To further strengthen food production, families are supported with basic farm tools, seedlings, and subsidized agricultural inputs such as seeds, helping improve productivity and household food availability.
Household Food Production
a. Poultry Keeping
Poultry keeping provides an accessible source of protein through eggs and poultry meat for many families. VFM promotes family-based poultry keeping to help households improve their nutrition while also creating opportunities for small household income.
b. Kitchen Gardening
Kitchen gardening enables households to grow vegetables and fruits within their homes, providing fresh and nutritious food at the doorstep. These gardens help families reduce the cost of purchasing vegetables while improving daily nutrition. Households practicing kitchen gardening can save up to KES 50 per day on vegetable purchases, while also improving access to healthy foods for children and family members.
Our Approach
Our agriculture program focuses on building resilient households through sustainable food production and improved nutrition. By combining community training, climate-smart agriculture, access to water, and support with farming inputs, we help families strengthen their food systems and reduce their vulnerability to hunger. Through these efforts, VFM continues to work toward a community where every household has reliable access to nutritious food and improved livelihoods.
