• Women Empowerment and Economic Inclusion

  • Empowered women strengthen families and transform communities. The women empowerment initiative supports women and caregivers in Rusinga Island to build sustainable livelihoods, improve household stability, and create better opportunities for their children.

The initiative particularly focuses on single mothers, widows, and the most vulnerable women, many of whom face significant economic challenges such as limited income opportunities, financial insecurity, and restricted access to financial services. Through targeted support and community-based interventions, women are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to improve their economic well-being and support their families.

By strengthening women’s economic independence, the initiative contributes to more resilient households and improved well-being for children and communities.

The 100 Weeks Project (Tekeleza Project)

A key initiative within this work is the 100 Weeks Program, which supports vulnerable women living in poverty to achieve long-term financial stability. The program provides structured support over a period of 100 weeks, combining financial assistance, mentorship, and practical training to help participants build sustainable livelihoods. Women receive guidance on financial management, savings, and income-generating activities that enable them to gradually improve their economic situation.

Through continuous mentorship and support, participants gain confidence, strengthen their decision-making capacity, and develop the skills necessary to manage their resources effectively.

Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILC)

To strengthen financial inclusion and collective economic resilience, women are also supported to form and participate in Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILC) groups. These groups provide a safe and structured platform where members can save money regularly and access small loans to support household needs or invest in income-generating activities. SILC groups also encourage financial discipline, mutual support, and collective problem-solving among women in the community.

Through these groups, women are able to strengthen their financial security, build savings, and develop a culture of responsible financial management.

    Skills Development and Livelihood Support

Women are supported to develop income-generating activities that help sustain their households. Through training and mentorship, participants explore small business opportunities and develop practical skills that contribute to improved household livelihoods. This support encourages entrepreneurship, financial responsibility, and sustainable economic activities that reduce household vulnerability.

    Strengthening Women's Voice and Participation

Beyond economic support, the initiative encourages women to actively participate in community development and decision-making processes. Building confidence and leadership skills enables participants to become active contributors within their households and communities. Peer learning and mentorship opportunities also allow women to share experiences, learn from one another, and build networks that strengthen collective resilience.
