Social Welfare and Community Support
Strong families build strong communities. At Victoria Friendly Montessori- VFM Kenya, the Social Welfare Program supports vulnerable children, families, elderly persons, and people living with disabilities in Rusinga Island to access the protection, care, and support they need to live with dignity and hope.
Many households face challenges such as poverty, illness, disability, and social isolation. Through community-based support, the program works closely with families to strengthen caregiving, protect vulnerable children, and promote dignity, resilience, and inclusion within the community.
Home Visits and Case Management
VFM Kenya social workers conduct regular home visits to vulnerable households to better understand their living conditions and provide direct support. These visits help identify children and families who may be at risk and allow the team to closely monitor their well-being over time. Through structured case management, social workers assess household needs, develop tailored support plans, and provide guidance to caregivers. When necessary, families are linked to appropriate services such as health facilities, schools, and other social support institutions to ensure they receive comprehensive care.
Family Matters Program (FMP)
A key component of the Social Welfare Program is the Family Matters Program (FMP), which focuses on strengthening family relationships and promoting positive parenting. The program works with caregivers and families to support healthy communication, responsible caregiving, and safe environments for children. Through mentorship sessions, guidance, and community engagement, the Family Matters Program helps caregivers develop practical skills that improve family stability and strengthen the well-being of children within the household.
Psychosocial Support
Children and families in vulnerable situations often experience emotional distress due to poverty, family challenges, illness, or loss. VFM Kenya provides psychosocial support and counselling to help individuals cope with these challenges and build resilience. Support services include individual counselling for children and caregivers, mentorship and emotional support, family guidance, and conflict resolution where necessary. These interventions help strengthen family relationships and improve the emotional well-being of children and caregivers.
Persons With Special Abilities
VFM Kenya is committed to promoting inclusion and equal participation for people with special abilities . The organization works with families and communities to reduce stigma and ensure that children and adults with special abilities are recognized, respected, and supported. This includes identifying individuals with special abilities, supporting caregivers with guidance and referrals, promoting participation in education and community activities, and raising awareness to encourage inclusive attitudes within the community.
Elderly Support
Many elderly persons in the community face challenges such as social isolation, poverty, and limited access to care. Through the Social Welfare Program, VFM Kenya works to ensure that elderly individuals remain supported and valued members of the community. Social workers conduct welfare visits, provide emotional support, and work with families and community members to strengthen care systems that uphold dignity and respect for older persons.
Community Awareness and Protection
In addition to providing direct support to households, VFM Kenya works with communities to strengthen child protection and social support systems. Through community dialogues and awareness activities, the organization promotes safe environments for children and encourages collective responsibility for protecting vulnerable individuals. These efforts help build communities where children are protected, families are supported, and every individual is valued.
